Is The Aloe Vera Diet Really An End To Yo-Yo Diets? Part 2

In part 1 of my description of the Aloe Vera diet I told you my story of how using this incredible diet I lost 30 pounds healthily and easily. In part 2, let’s deal with the ‘elephant in the room’, namely does the Aloe vera diet consist of aloe vera for breakfast, lunch, dinner; do I have to eat Aloe vera soup, stew, grilled, roasted and so on? Anything as long as it’s 100% Aloe vera!

Well relax. No! You are not living on Aloe vera and nothing else! Far from it. If you follow this program you will be consuming Aloe vera gel in a very pure and crucially, ‘live’ form, every day. However, you will also be eating a healthy balanced and nutritious diet that will leave your feeling full, satisfied and most important of all, nutritionally supported throughout your weight loss program.

Aloe vera though IS important! And before going on to the actual program in part 3, let’s look at the top 10 reasons why Aloe vera is a critical part of this healthy weight loss program.

British doctor and recognised authority on the benefits of Aloe vera, Dr Peter Atherton MB ChB, DObst, RCOG, FRCGP (his business cards must be really wide!) is my source of information, since I make no claim to be medically qualified and wouldn’t want you to think otherwise!

  1. Dr Atherton says that the number one benefit of drinking (yes DRINKING!) Aloe vera gel  (from a pure and ‘live’ source) is that it re-balances deficiencies in nutrients often missing (and hard to obtain) through a regular diet (even if it’s already a ‘healthy’ one!). Aloe vera has 19 of the 20 amino acids needed by the human body, including 7 out of 8 essential ones that enable the body to allow complex enzyme systems to work really well. Giving you a tremendous feeling of well being because your body can function at 100%
  2. Aloe vera gel vitamins B12 (rare in plants), Vitamins A, B-group, C, E and folic acid. Now many of these the body cannot retain, and they need to be consumed daily from a natural (not chemical!) source. The benefit of this is that the body’s defence system against oxidative stress is naturally boosted.
  3. Aloe vera contains minerals, some of which are calcium, sodium, potassium, iron, chromium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc! All delivered to the human body in a very absorbable (and therefore usable form!).
  4. Aloe vera is a natural balancer. It can be especially effective in the gut, where various bacteria and yeasts become un-balanced and are associated with several different conditions. The Aloe vera gel helps to naturally re-balance things.
  5. Salicylic acid and plant sterols contained in the Aloe vera gel can soothe muscles, and maintain healthy joints, mobility and flexibility.
  6. The effect on your skin. Aloe vera can increase the efficacy of fibroblasts (specialised cells found in the skin that produce collagen and elastin). This can improve the structure of your skin making it more elastic and younger looking and…
  7. Aloe vera provides essential nutrition for the basal cells of your skin (which begin life deep in the lowest layer of your skin, the epidermis. Meaning again that the vital functions of your skin are better supported as well as helping your skin to feel and look rejuvenated.
  8. Aloe vera gel contains a long chain sugar (polysaccharide) that has a known effect on the cytokine system – the chemical messengers of the immune system, no less! Aloe vera  can help to balance the immune system (called an immunomodulator!). And Dr Atherton points out that in the USA, this sugar, extracted from Aloe vera has even been made into a drug!
  9. & 10. and finally, for our principal focus, the diet; Aloe vera is very beneficial in assisting with healthy digestion. Clinical evidence suggests that Aloe vera gel helps the bowel to absorb nutrients more efficiently, especially protein and it can improve bowel function which errr (coughs) makes it easier to pass bulkier stools.

Now as I said, I’m not the expert, I’ll leave that to the good Dr Atherton. All I know is, that the Aloe vera diet is the ONLY diet I have EVER done (and trust me, I’ve done plenty!), where I’ve felt terrific, lost the weight healthily and kept it off! Need I say more?

OK, well a bit more… In part 3, I’ll explain some of the key concepts of the rest of the program, including why this is NOT a ‘quick fix’ diet, but is a permanent solution! Until then…

Is The Aloe Vera Diet Really An End To Yo-Yo Diets? Part 1

Before getting into the ‘how’s ‘ and ‘why’s’ of the Aloe vera diet, let me tell you why I’m such a big fan of it. Here’s my own story…

“I had been digging my grave with my teeth for 15 years. I was at least 40 pounds overweight, with borderline high blood pressure and had early signs of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). I’ve tried pretty much every diet there is, from the very well known ones to a total liquid diet under doctor supervision. All worked to a degree, all were really HARD and ALL yo-yo’ed the fat straight back on as soon as I finished them as I resumed ‘digging’!

For a while I was sceptical about the Aloe vera diet and wouldn’t even look at it. I thought it was yet another ‘starvation’ diet! But I became more and more depressed about my weight and failing health. Again I spoke to my doctor. He offered me the same ‘starvation’ diets I had tried and failed at for years! Finally, I took a proper look at the Aloe vera diet. I discovered there was some real science behind it. It FED me, not starved me. It CLEANSED my body so it was able to absorb the nutrients better. I liked what I read and decided to give it a serious go.

It began with a 9-day detox. The first couple of days they said would be tough, and they were. But I figured anyone can do something for two days! Especially if they are as unhappy about their weight as I was! The next seven days, where actually pretty easy in comparison and as long as I followed the programme plan, it really wasn’t too bad.

Since then I’ve been on the main weight loss programme which is incredibly simple and most of the time, really easy!

  1. I’m not getting starving hungry like on other diets – I’ve almost never needed any willpower!
  2. My blood pressure has normalised (I get this and my weight-loss checked every two weeks by my doctor).
  3. My IBS symptoms have subsided – I also because of a mild lactose intolerance, cut out milk and have my shakes with oat or soya milk for preference.
  4. I’m spending LESS money on junk food and drinks than ever before and the savings I’ve made are more than paying for my diet, so because the money I’m spending is coming out of my old grocery budget, you could say I’m almost getting my diet program for free!.
  5. The weight and inches are dropping away nicely – 14 pounds and 5 inches in the first month. Modest, but HEALTHY.
  6. 30 pounds lost in total so far.
  7. I have loads more energy.
  8. I look great, I feel great and I have transformed my wardrobe.
  9. Some days, I even eat LESS than the programme recommends I can have! Because I’m NOT hungry.

Weight Loss – Personal Update…

Just a quick update. I’ve been so busy playing ‘catch-up’ with the blog articles about the program, I realised I haven’t posted how I am progressing personally.

It’s been 7 weeks since I commenced the Clean 9™ detox program and Nutri-Lean™ weight loss program. By this morning my blood pressure (which was typically 140/98 before) was 121/78 (normal!) and I have lost 18 pounds and 4 inches from my waist and 4 from my chest.  More importantly, the last six weeks I’ve lost 12 pounds in total, so that’s an average of 2 pounds a week, which is text book ideal safe, healthy weight loss!

More relevant to me though, is do I feel I can continue towards my target weight? Well, I can honestly say:

1) I’m still finding the program incredibly easy – as long as I follow it

2) I’m finding that the program is very flexible

3) IF I am hungry – I still have plenty of my daily ‘allowance’ left – I’ve never been in a situation when I’m hungry and I’m not supposed to eat anything else for the rest of the day.

4) I haven’t cheated! No really!! I just haven’t felt the need or the desire!! That’s a FIRST for me!

5) Some days I haven’t had everything I was ‘allowed’ to eat and other days I’ve had it all. I’m consuming a fraction of what I used to – when I was fat!

6) I have tons more energy

7) I get ‘twitchy’ if I don’t do SOME exercise every day! I’m not obsessed with it… but I’m enjoying my long walks with the dog, swimming and the gym,

8) Unlike other diets, I’m really not just counting the days until it’s over. I’m really looking forward to being at my target weight and continuing to eat healthily.

‘Exercise’ Is Not A Four Letter Word! (It’s Eight Actually!)…

OK, I admit it, I used to loathe ‘exercise’ too! Seriously, if I ever felt the ‘urge’ to exercise, I made myself a coffee, got a chocolate biscuit, sat down on the sofa and watched some stupid reality tv until the ‘urge’ had passed! (who said ‘couch potatoe’?) Now I KNEW this was wrong, I even had a gym membership which I NEVER used, but kept paying on purpose because I knew that one day, just wasting money on something I never used would finally motivate me!

The problem was, the fatter I got, the less I wanted to exercise and more importantly (to me), be SEEN in the gym trying exercise! I didn’t feel good about myself and my confidence about my appearence fell through the floor.

So what changed?

Well, first lets explode a common myth about exercise. Exercise by itself does NOT burn fat! Well OK it does, but at such a phenomenally low rate you’d have to run something like the equivalent of a marathon to lose a pound of fat! Who’s got the time, the inclination or the fitness to do THAT three times a week? Not to mention the high potential for injuring yourself in the process!

No, exercise is not a two step process – i.e. exercise = burn fat. Exercise is in fact a THREE step process, exercise to raise your level of fitness (which includes toning and building muscle!), which in turn raises your metabolism and subsequent burning of…. fat! What’s the difference? Well the difference is that whilst the actual exercising is an inefficient form of burning fat, the BENEFITS of exercising makes your body more efficient at burning fat, even whilst you are sleeping!

So I’m afraid the bad news is… yes, you DO need to exercise!

The good news is… exercise doesn’t have to be boring or difficult!

Oh and whilst I’m on the topic… I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been asked, ” if I do your weight loss program (Nutri-lean), do I have to exercise?” Now come of people, think about it, you were given two legs, two arms, muscles and joints for a reason… to move!!! Our ancestors didn’t call it ‘exercise’ though, they called it… survival! If you didn’t move you couldn’t escape from predators and you couldn’t hunt for food… so either way, you’d die! Period!

The human body is designed to store ‘energy’ in fat cells to cope with lean times when food is not plentiful. It is ALSO designed to move! (exercise!). So if you were hoping you could avoid exercise AND lose weight, get real and forget it!

But, exercise is not ALL bad! Where people go wrong with exercise is they get hung up on the forms of exercise  they should undertake. If you don’t like going to gym… don’t go! If you don’t like swimming? Don’t swim! If you don’t like team sports? Don’t join a team! But, find something you DO like! Apart from doing nothing, it really doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you MOVE!!

One method of exercise that really works well, especially if you’re very overweight, is the ‘Clicker’ method.

What’s a ‘clicker’? It’s an inexpensive little gadget you attatch to a belt around your waist called a pedometer. Simply, it measures how many steps you take. A good plan is to purchase a reasonable quality pedometer or ‘clicker’ and wear it every day for a week. Standing up, sitting down or walking, over the week, if you check the read out every day, it will tell you how many clicks (or steps) you take on average per day. Now it will ‘click’ even when you’re sat down and sorry, we have to disregard them. But the ‘average’ should give us an idea of how ‘active’ you are.

Once you know your average ‘clicks’ per day, it’s simply a matter of consciously making the effort to be more active – by active I mean walking! So if you drive, park further away from the shops and walk to them, Or if you take the dog for a walk (always a good one to imrove), instead of 10 minutes go for 15 and so on. When you first start, your ‘clicks’ per day are likely to be well below 3000 per day if you currently have a sedentary lifestyle. Just like I used to. So gradually, over a few weeks, aim to increase your clicks per day, by say 1000 every few days. Your ultimate target is to click about 10,000 clicks per day! (that equates very, very roughly to about 3 miles of walking – ish!).

Now of course you could ‘run’ some of the clicks, that’s even better! But, I don’t want to put you off and it’s not necessary, if you don’t like running, don’t run! Walking is just fine! Ideally, increase the number of clicks you do incrementally until its 10,000 clicks a day and ideally, as you get ‘fitter’ and feel fitter, increase the intensity of your walking to a brisk pace as much as is practical.

Now the clicker is just one idea. But can you see how simple it is? No expensive gym memberships, no team sports and if you have a dog, the dog will LOVE you!

Bottom line, you MUST exercise if you want to lose weight and keep the weight off, but find something, anything you LIKE to do, There is no prescriptive exercise you MUST do. Just find something you like and do it every day! Don’t push too hard to begin with, just increase slowly, but be persistant! It does get easier! Honest!

Now, the cleansing/detoxing (Clean 9) part of the program was over and it was time to move onto the Nutr-Lean long-term and permanent weight loss program. So day 10 involved the relatively minor and easy shift into the ‘new’ program. Something I will remain on until I hit my target weight.

The main difference between the detox and the nuti-lean part of the program is the introduction of food at more regular intervals and the fat absorbing supplement Forever Lean http://www.foreverlean.com. This new supplement contains the prickly pear cactus and white kidney bean, both well known for their ability to inhibit the body’s absorption of fat from the food we eat.

The program breaks down into a smoothie/shake and piece of fruit for breakfast, a small mid-morning snack, a shake and salad for lunch, mid-afternoon snack and a balanced evening meal (approx 400 calories), 120ml of Aloe Vera and of coure, two litres of water!

Now that might not sound like very much, but my overwhelming experience (and I’m a man remember so I can get REALLY hungry!!), is that most days I have struggled to get through my ‘allowance’!! Yes, I was amazed too!!! But the very sound principal of little and often, made up of protein and complex carbs which ensure a slow release of energy, satiating hunger pangs and making the whole experience generally a very comfortable one.

I’ve made it a rule not to skip the products, especially the ‘shakes’ which contain 100% of my daily RDA’s of vitamins and minerals and the aloe vera, which is just amazing, incredible, fabulous (and a little yucky to taste), stuff! (but it’s ok to mix it with a little juice or even put it in the shake if the taste really bothers you? But I drink it neat – go on.. you’re a grown up – you’ll survive! ). If I DO skip something, it’s usually the banana I put in the shake at breakfast time (though I do like some cranberries or strawberries in there), or the salad/fresh veg part of my lunch or my mid afternoon snack.

I don’t intentionally miss my meals, I simply don’t feel hungry! And what’s more, if I DO get hungry later on in the evening, I still have something left in my daily allowance to quell the hunger completely. Now I know there’s a myth out there that you shouldn’t eat later on in the evenings, but that’s just what it is, a myth! As long as it’s healthy, and maybe was instead of your afternoon snack when you weren’t hungry, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Well, I’ve been on the nutri-lean element of the program a full month now. I’ve lost another 8 pounds, I have tons of energy, I’ve gone down a size in clothes and I feel great! How many times have I strayed and eaten ‘junk’ – stuff I shouldn’t or craved it? Honestly? NEVER!! And that was not because I have strong will power! I just don’t get hungry!!! And IF I am hungry, there’s always plenty left in my daily program that I can have! So if the ‘munchies’ appear, out comes the hummus and the raw carrot, broccoli etc or the oatcakes and peanut butter (the not sugared variety) or a nice small bowl of porridge – yum!

OK – I can hear you thinking, what! No pizza? No fries? No chips? No chocolate? Where’s the fun in that? Well honestly, aside from the chocolate – a little tip on that in a moment – I just do NOT crave the junk foods that made me sick and unhealthy and FAT! Period!

Chocolate? Well, that’s one thing I DO allow myself and I do it for a reason. I buy a small bar of 70% cocoa plus DARK chocolate! (It has to be dark – sorry for you milk chocolate lovers! ) And after I’ve had a ‘meal’ or if I’m just feeling a bit of a munchyness need, I have a small piece of dark chocolate! Yes, it’s true! And… I’m still losing weight!! You see, I find that little piece of dark chocolate after a ‘meal’ tells my brain – you’ve finished eating and you are satiated! It works!!! Seriously! I don’t need it after every meal, most of the time the Garcinia I take half an hour before the meal – satiates my appetite very well, but sometimes, well, it’s just nice to have it and I really feel the difference right after I have it!

Next time, I’m going to blog about something I hitherto haven’t mentioned, *whispers conspiratorially, ‘exercise’!

Clean 9 – The First 9 Days – What’s Involved?

Well, if you’ve my previous blog, you should already be prepared for the first two days. They were hard, but they weren’t THAT hard and my goodness, they were worth it! Four days into the program, my blood pressure, which has been moderately high for over a decade was almost completely normal! I had no idea that could happen on Aloe Vera? I’m writing this blog some 5 weeks from that day and I am happy to report that my ‘normalised’ blood pressure is still normal. Of course, this might not work for everyone, that’s just my own personal and unexpected benefit of the detox.

So, what is actually involved?

Well, the whole principal of this program is that you need to guarantee that your body gets 100% of your daily nutritional needs. This is NOT a starvation diet! Anyone can lose weight by starving!!! Call it what you like, the Atkins diet, the cabbage diet, slimmers world, weight watchers and so on, most diets work on the same principal… starve!

This one IS different. In this program, you FEED your way towards a leaner, healthier you. But to begin with, it’s vital we ‘reset’ the body’s capacity to absorb nutrients. This is a two step process. First, we need to flush out the toxins and second, we need to cleanse and restore the digestive system. That’s why the ‘clean 9′ program is a full 9 days.

During that time you will consume two very tasty meal replacement shakes (that provide 100% of your daily RDA’s of vitamins and minerals)  a powerful prebiotic, the aloe vera, a probiotic (to populate the bowels where nutrients are absorbed with ‘good’ bacteria), Garcinia (to help stop you getting hungry), bee pollen (to help sustain you and give you energy) and of course.. food!

All these things together, create for you body a supportive, cleansing and nutritious program. The ‘food’ you eat by the way, is a balanced meal once a day. Roughly, a 600 caloried meal consisting of one third protein, one third complex carb and one third healthy oils.

So, how did I get on. Well to be honest, after the first two days and that darn cafeine hangover, the remaining 7 of the detox were relatively easy. I learnt not to skip parts of the program. For example, mid-morning snack was two tiny bee pollen tablets! I thought, how much difference could they possibly make? Trust me, they made a HUGE difference! Also, I learnt to be very strict about my water intake. I had a two litre bottle of water (my minimum daily allowance) and I took it with me everywhere. Sipping from it regulary, (rather than trying to gulp it all down in two or three goes).

A word about the water. Like or loathe it, you CAN’T live without water! The two litres a day on this program may seem daunting to some and you may not like it. My advice if you do this program, is like the taste of the aloe vera, which isn’t great, I have to be honest, LEARN to like it! It’s worth it. OK… long blog and much more I could say, but really all you need to take from this is that the 9 day cleanse is not that difficult and really, really worthwhile! Now you are ready for some serious long-term health building and weight loss!

Oh and in case you were wondering, I lost 7 pounds in those 9 days. For everyone this will be different. And weight loss of greater than 1 to 4 pounds a week over a prolonged period of time is not healthy. But it certainly boosted my morale and belief to have lost 7 pounds! A great start and I was beginning to feel great!

Now, as I said earlier, for me it was just the coffee I had to give up, but a friend of mine who used to smoke, and has also done the ‘Clean 9′ said that the caffeine withdrawal was FAR worse than anything he ever experienced when giving up nicotine!

I expected to be tired for these two days and I expected my head to hurt. I was right on both counts! I was glad I scheduled them to be non-working days. On the other hand, it wasn’t the end of the world. I was very happy I had finally taken charge of my health. And I kept reminding myself, that come day 3, whilst the junk food would NOT be returning, the coffee (and nicotine – if I had smoked) were allowed to return.

It was ONLY two days! For those two days, I lived on a large quantity of Forever’s Aloe Vera Gel (a prebiotic and much more – why this is important in a later blog), Forever’s Ultra Lite high protein shake (which contained 100% of my recommended daily allowances (RDA’s) of essential vitamins and minerals), Forever’s amazing Probiotic, Forever’s Bee Pollen for energy and nutrition (more on this in later blog too), and Forever Garcinia (a natural appetite suppressant) and finally TWO litres of water sipped throughout each day.

So, how hard was it? Well, I’m certainly glad I was clear about my ‘Whys’? If anytime I felt my resolve sinking, they stopped me from doing anything silly. My head (from the caffeine withdrawal) DID hurt quite a bit and I preferred (as it was meant to be a detox!) NOT to take any drugs for that and I rested quite a bit. Since I had scheduled to be doing just this, it was not therefore a very hard weekend. I was certainly glad when monday came and I knew that in the evening I would be eating food again, but it was not bad enough to put me off ever doing it again.Overall, I’m extremely pleased with myself I got through it and it really felt like I was doing something serious about improving my health – finally!

Incidentally, having lost the caffeine headache by Monday, I decided to stay off the coffee at least for the duration of the ‘Clean 9′ program. After all, I was no longer physically craving it. But that was my choice, it felt sensible and now it was achievable! But if you feel the urge to start smoking again and drinking your coffee, there’s no reason you shouldn’t. Alcohol though? You can live without alcohol for 9 days can’t you? hmmmmmm

Next time, I’ll explain in more detail what the different parts of the program were for and why they are beneficial.

I've Lost 30 Pounds!Hi, I’ve never done a blog before, so bear with me! The reason I started this one was to keep a record of my  progress in my new weight loss program. My Brother recommended that I take a serious look at Forever Living Products as a means to increase my income in a fun, ethical and rewarding way.

I’ve been digging my grave with my teeth for 15 years. I was at least 40 pounds overweight, with borderline high blood pressure and had early signs of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I’ve tried pretty much every diet there is, from the very well known ones to  a total liquid diet under doctor supervision. All worked to a fashion, all were really HARD and all yo-yo’ed the fat straight back on as soon as I finished them as I resumed ‘digging’!

For a while I was sceptical about the Nutri-Lean diet and wouldn’t even look at it. I thought it was yet another ‘starvation’ diet! But I became more and more depressed about my weight and failing health. Again I spoke to my doctor. He offered me the same ‘starvation’ diets I had tried and failed at for years! Finally, I looked at Nutri-Lean. I discovered there was some real science behind it. It FED me, not starved me. It CLEANSED my body so it was better able to accept the nutrients. I liked what I read and decided to give it a serious go.

I began with the 9-day ‘Clean 9’ detox. The first couple of days they said would be tough, and they were. But I figured anyone can do something for two days, especially if they are as unhappy about their weight as I was! The next seven days, were actually pretty easy in comparison and as long as I followed the program plan, it really wasn’t too bad.

Since then I’ve been on the main Nutri-Lean program which is incredibly simple and most of the time really easy!

  1. I’m not getting starving hungry like on other diets – I’ve almost never needed any willpower!
  2. My blood pressure has normalised (I get this and my weight loss checked every two weeks by my Doctor)
  3. My IBS symptoms have subsided – I also cut out milk and have my shakes with oat or soya milk for preference.
  4. I’m spending LESS money on junk food and drinks than ever before and the savings I’ve made are more than paying for my Nutri-Lean, so because the money I’m spending is coming out of my old grocery budget, you could say I’m almost getting my Aloe Vera for free!
  5. The weight and inches are dropping away nicely – 14 pounds and 5 inches in the first  month. Modest, but HEALTHY!
  6. 30 pounds lost in total so far!
  7. I have tons more energy
  8. I look great, I feel great and I have transformed my wardrobe!
  9. Some days, I even eat LESS than they say I can have! Because I’m NOT hungry!

I’d recommend this program to anyone. No more ‘yo-yo’ing’!! You can’t put a price on good health, I’ve stopped digging my grave with my teeth,  nothing tastes as great as ‘slim’ feels!
